// How Do Authority Metrics Work?

Authority metrics are a measure of how authoritative a website is, and therefore how likely it is to rank in Google.

In general, the most authoritative websites are most likely to rank in Google, get more traffic to their website and drive more conversions.

The primary factor used to calculate these authority scores, being backlinks, is not the only factor that can influence rankings. But the relevance of backlinks is definitely up there with one of the most important ranking factors, according to Google themselves.

The authority score simply predicts the potential ranking success of a particular domain, as opposed to actually contributing to a domain’s ranking position.

This is why focusing primarily on improving a website’s authority metric isn’t particularly helpful. But understanding the authority of a website relative to its competitors can be really useful when analyzing ranking opportunities.

It depends because it’s all relative…. No surprise there.

Say for example, your business sells a really niche product you may find that a Domain rating of 30+ may be enough to get ranking on the first page of Google.

Alternatively, if you want to get the website ranking for a difficult keyword, anything lower than a 40 is unlikely to rank on the first page of the search results.

- Check your backlink profile

Google has confirmed that, when ranking websites, they check whether other prominent websites on the subject link to the page, as that’s a good sign that the information is of high quality.

Relevance and authority of the linking domains can have a huge impact on how google perceives your own website so improving this can improve your authority scores respectively.

- Learn from others

Check out what it is that your competitors are doing that you might be missing and use the Google ranking factors as your checklist to analyze your competitors.

How fresh is their content? Are they updating it regularly? How many good quality backlinks do they have?

Also take a look at how they’re optimizing their content to address user search intent.

- Brand equity is important

To build authority, you need to build brand authority too.

This can be achieved by increasing brand awareness and creating positive experiences for customers.
