Lucky Philip Dube (pronounced doo-beh) (3 August 1964 – 18 October 2007) was a South African reggae musician and Rastafarian. He recorded 22 albums in Zulu, English and Afrikaans in a 25-year period and was South Africa's biggest-selling reggae artist. Dube was murdered in the Johannesburg suburb of Rosettenville on the evening of 18 October 2007.

Reggae is known by many as Jamaica's most recognizable and influential musical genre. And now it has been officially recognized by the United Nations.

This past week, reggae earned an entry on UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The list is meant to "enhance the visibility of traditions from various communities without recognizing standards of excellence or exclusivity" as outlined on this year's list.
With the selection, reggae music is joining hundreds of other traditions from around the globe, including embroidery art from Tajikistan, tamboradas drum-playing rituals in Spain and pottery skills of the women of Sejnane in Tunisia. UNESCO dubbed reggae music as a "vehicle for social commentary, a cathartic practice" and "a voice for all." Augustus "Gussie" Clarke, a reggae producer and one of the leading advocates for reggae to be recognized on the list, agrees.

I hope you are all catching on to the fact that I am editing and uploading these songs one at a time. You are witnessing the process. A lot of people have been asking to see the whole concert. The reality is, I have only been able to get into these original analog camera masters in the last year and I am just one person (Diane) trying to bring all these treasures back to life. Editing well takes a little time, so please bear with me as I go through this great concert song by song. (If you are enjoying this work, please help support it with a small donation,, by clicking the "thanks$" button under the video. Your gift will be well appreciated. Once the archive starts bringing in more income, I may be able to assemble a team (or at least an assistant) to get this work up and out faster.

This particular performance of "Born to Suffer" brings Lucky's vocal back-up partner, Thuthukani Cele, out from behind his keyboard (again) to lead the audience in a joyous sing-along. Cannot praise the excellence of Lucky's whole band enough. They didn't just put on a concert, they put on a show and everybody was a part of it. .

Also have to big up our cameramen here: Earl, Stafford and Lee, for their brilliance in live shooting that actually looks live. We had 3 mismatched cameras at this show, but it doesn't matter. The cameras almost function like members of the band—they're right there in the mix.

This performance took place on July 8, 1990 at Bay Street, in Sag Harbor, NY. which is about 100 miles from NYC, on Long Island.

More treasures from Lucky will follow. Thank you all so much for your comments and your repeat visits. It means a lot to me. It's obvious that
Lucky's spirit is as strong as ever.

One love
Diane Strong

The perfect description of the world's biggest dilemma - GREED. Too many have become rich and powerful through taking...blessed are the givers. 30+ years later, Lucky's lyrics are as relevant as ever...and we miss his voice and presence. This concert was videotaped at Bay Street, Sag Harbor NY, on July 8, 1990, by Step Lively Video. Portions of this concert appeared on the television series, Reggae Strong. From the 2002 album Soul Taker.

She got outside one morning
To see what' s going on
'Cause she heard all the noises
In the night, It' s a celebration
Even though she was old and grey
It didn' t mean she was deaf and dumb
She looks one look at the man
Throws her hands in the air
And said God help us all
Too much power in one mans hands
Is dangerous
She has never tasted freedom
And all the things
We take for granted
Then she looked at me and said
Son, Is this the end of our suffering?

Chorus:

Is this freedom?
Is this freedom?
We have just witnessed the
Change of power from one fool
And liar to another
Our lives on the line again
She had lived through the wars
She didn' t wanna go through it all again
She has seen injustice
She has seen corruption
She has seen racism
And any other kind of suffering
You can think about
Then she said to me
Son, Is this the end of suffering?
Chorus till fade

High energy Live show in Austria, Europe Lucky Dube the Reggae Legend and icon!

Lucky Dube, elder statesman of mbaqanga (traditional Zulu) music and ambassador of South African roots reggae music, returns with his thirteenth studio album and its as joyful an experience as hes ever conjured.
Lucky says that he called the album Respect because that is what the world needs most right now. He says you can live with people even if you dont believe in their beliefs, or even if you dont like what they like; as long as you have respect for them. ('Shut Up' is Luckys message to those who cant say anything nice about others.) So love and respect go hand in hand in his eyes. A naïve sentiment? Not if Luckys vibe percolates into communities worldwide.
That pop warmth, radiating from low to upper register with echoes of Pete Tosh and Jimmy Cliff respectively, is still there. The arrangements are built around righteous verses from the non-smoking non-drinking Rastafarian, supported by a cast of talented local musicians: rootical high-amp rhythm section ('Shembe Is The Way'), fanfares of iridecsent brass and multi-tracked female voices on the chorus (the title song is a great example of how traditional African sounds can evolve the reggae form). The guitar work adds just the right amount of zest (check the government-chastising 'Political Games') as does the secular favourite, the organ (Never Leave You).
Whether reminding us to celebrate of life or warning us of evil along the way, there are few more galvanising and pleasurable listens than Lucky Dube and Respect, his biggest production yet, is testament to a fine voice and enduring power.
