Activist investments
Activist investment is a form of investment used by some big hedge funds, in which the investment fund uses its right to vote the members of the board of directors in order to shape the company decisions.
Why only large hedge funds do that? That’s because, in order to have enough power to influence the board of directors you have to own a !!BIG!! stake in the company. Something that the average retail investor can’t afford. None the less, many times the hedge fund still has to convince more passive institutional investors like BlackRock, Vanguard, State Street etc.. because they don’t own a majority stake in the company. But if they ally with other relevant investors they can proceed more easily with transformation in the company. This technique started to be very well known in the 80s when Carl Icahn and Thomas Boone Pickens started buying big stakes in publicly traded companies. After amassing a big stake they forced managements to create value for shareholders, so the management either had to do what these hedge fund managers wanted them to do or to pay them a premium in order to convince them to back out of the equity of the company. They were considered corporate raiders rather than activist investors. More recently Carl Icahn had a clash BlackRock Chairman and CEO Larry Fink. Larry Fink accused activist investors of not worrying for the well-being of companies on the long term, but only about the short term gains. This attack was aimed at Icahn himself. He also criticized the way activists come out in public attacking companies. As a matter of fact, activists frequently use media like tv, news outlets etc… to influence the public perception towards a company in order to shift its decisions. New strong criticism came when investor Bill Ackman came out live on CNBC making terrifying predictions about the markets earlier this year because of lockdowns and during this interview the stock market dropped significantly. It later came out that Bill Ackman held shorts in the markets for billions of dollars and that drop increased his profits.
Activist investment has also a bright side. For example when the management is not acting in the best interest of the shareholders, these investors can push for change for example by cutting on expenses, cutting unnecessary bonuses for management etc… Otherwise these investors can report companies that are not working well more in general. For example Bill Ackman understood the risks of Credit Default Swaps on Mortgage backed securities. So he shorted MBIA, an important operator in this field and pushed the government to step in the company to regulate it. By doing so he made it clear for the public that the company wasn’t operating correctly, so that retail investors would stay away from that company. No action was taken by the authorities but he held his shorts until The great crisis came and the company went bust.
We’ve already covered Elliott Management founder Paul Singer so check that out. We’ll soon cover Carl Icahn, Bill Ackman and other activist investors so make sure not to leave without subscribing to the channel.

Description: As a global community, we are facing an undeniable climate crisis that “unequivocally” has been caused by human activity. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change states that “every corner of the planet is already being affected and it could get far worse.” Armenia is no exception. This conference seeks to begin an interdisciplinary discussion inviting environmental scientists, geographers, policy experts, and activists to examine challenges posed by climate change and recurrent conflict, as well as present possible solutions through policy advocacy and local activism.

Meet Dr Navneet Bhullar, founder of Action Group Against Plastic Pollution (AGAPP) in Jalandhar, Punjab, India. She divides her time between the US and India. She is activist at heart. She has previously volunteered at Doctors Without Borders. Last year after the lockdown, she could observe more and more plastic being used and could not stand our environment being destroyed by bad plastic waste management and that’s when she together with other doctors, counsellors to create AGAPP and start getting to the bottom of the problem and create more awareness.
I am following her lead and have joined AGAPP as a member and we are trying to create more awareness around plastic waste management.

The January 2022 event »Radical Friends. Online DAO Summit for Decentralisation of Power and Resources in the Artworld« was one of the central Lockdown Lessons activities. Artists, activists, and academics explored the potential of blockchain technologies for art and civil society. New forms of organisation such as Decentralised Autonomous Organisations (DAOs) enabled by blockchain technologies can play a significant role for artistic and civil society infrastructures. After a short introduction of the DAOWO Global Initiative (Decentralised Autonomous Organisation With Others) by the moderator Sarah Johanna Theurer, curator at the Haus der Kunst and theorist on techno-social theories, and Mario Schruff, programme curator and initiator at the Goethe-Institut London, the participating artist and activist collective eeefff from Minsk will present their performance »Tactical Forgetting«. In it, computer-assisted exercises address digital memory and shared events that are more likely to be forgotten because of their sensitive content or community safety. The artistic intervention/presentation will be followed by a discussion on »Decentralized Strategies for Art and Activism«, which examines the potentials and pitfalls of decentralised digital infrastructures for art and civil society. Speakers Olexii Kuchanskyi – a Kyiv-based researcher, artist and queer writer whose main interests lie in experimental moving image art, its ecological effects, and critical cultures of nature, Radical friends co-curator Penny Rafferty, Mario Schruff, and Dzina Zhuk and Nicolay Spesivtsev (eeefff), reflect on these topics from the perspectives of their own artistic, curatorial, and activist practices

SHOF-ECGI Conference on sustainable finance and corporate governance 2020
The Social Justice Summit is hosted annually by the College of Education & Human Services -- Western Illinois University.
The Summer of 2020 brought much needed national attention to issues of racial justice in the country and globally like never before. In the marches and protests on television, were our students. Student activism has a rich history on college campuses as well, dating back decades, and is responsible for many educational and socio-political advancements. We have seen grassroot organizing from younger generations take new forms of activism. However, most higher education professionals are not prepared to work with student activists. The expectations on staff and faculty of color are higher than of their peers to engage with student activists on campus. What does activism look like on our college campuses today and in the future? What do professionals need to do to prepare themselves to work with student activists? We will explore these questions and develop new possibilities for making our campuses more inclusive and student success driven.
