When President Cyril Ramaphosa cut the ribbon at the new plant of Africa's first smartphone manufacturer, Mara, in Durban on Thursday, technicians started assembling a device for him.
By the end of his tour of the plant at the Dube Trade Port - about 15 minutes later - a Mara smartphone was ready for him.
Thousands of Mara Phones, the first made-in-Africa smartphone, are expected to be manufactured at the plant, which was officially launched a week after its flagship factory was opened in Rwanda.
At the SA Investment Forum exactly a year ago, Mara Phone CEO Ashish Thakkar promised to make a R1.5bn investment in SA by opening a high-tech smartphone manufacturing facility.
A year later, he delivered on his promise.

The JSC heard that Lamola last year asked Zondo to consider Mlambo for the Constitutional Court. Zondo told the JSC this was not the norm, though he would not venture to say whether it was unlawful.
He also said Mlambo, who had previously declined an offer to act in the Constitutional Court, had been available at short notice, so it made sense to select him.
Malema said Fraser was leading a strategic institute of the state and monies were thrown around from the state coffers, yet Fraser was not compelled to answer for 9 billion Rands, “yet Zizi Kodwa was called to answer for R1 million”.
Malema asked about the release of the final report that may implicate President Cyril Ramaphosa and why Zondo did not include findings around the President in the reports already released to avoid the issue that Ramaphosa may feel obligated to give Zondo the job.

Africa must unite and do away with borders: Kenyan president Uhuru Kenyatta in Pretoria
If Africa wants to be a manufacturing giant, it needs to do away with borders.
This was the view of Kenyan president Uhuru Kenyatta on Tuesday afternoon while on a state visit to SA.
“These borders were not made for us. If we are going to be manufacturing giants, we need to do away with these borders,” said Kenyatta, addressing the SA-Kenya Business Forum in South Africa.

With rumors of Zambia being bought off by China.
African leaders must know what they want as they engage China on trade relations, this is a warning from Prof Patrick Lumumba who was commenting on the recently concluded Focac summit in Beijing, China. Lumumba who was is South Africa at the Vaal High Impact leadership summit, also commended Zimbabwean President, Emmerson Mnangagwa on his attempt to bring inclusivity in Zimbabwe.
Lumumba also shared his vision for Africa in 2063
"I see the Chinese coming, be careful. They all started trading with us and then conquered us. Now as you trade with them, be careful as we've be bitten many times before"
“I am amongst some of the people who were saying the meeting was supposed to be held on the African soil discussing African issues with a Chinese delegation so that the needs of Africa are discussed on the African continent.
“China has defined what she wants and have realised that Africa has the resources and China is now exporting to fish to Africa but the question is what is Africa exporting beyond the raw materials and my view is we must ensure that China will not run show in Africa,” he said
This comes at the background of the move by the 44 heads of state to hold a meeting in China and accept a 60 billion debt in the name of fair relations with no strings attached
