Check out these amazing health benefits of citrus!

Timestamps
0:00 Are citrus fruits good for you?
1:02 Nutrients in lemons and limes
1:25 Health benefits of citrus
2:18 Citrus for scurvy
4:30 Other citrus benefits

Today I want to cover the health benefits of citrus. Oranges and grapefruit contain too much sugar, so we’re going to focus on lemons and limes. Citrus fruits have a lot of phytonutrients, but we’re going to mainly talk about flavonoids.

One type of flavonoid is the bioflavonoid, which is a part of the vitamin C complex. It’s essential in supporting healthy gums. It’s important to get the majority of your vitamins from your food so that you get the whole vitamin complex.

For example, you get the whole vitamin C complex from citrus, rather than just the ascorbic acid you would get from a synthetic vitamin C supplement.

You can get phytonutrient benefits from citrus fruit and the leaves, roots, and flowers of the lemon and lime trees.

Nutrients in lemons and limes:
• Vitamin B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B9
• Calcium
• Iron
• Magnesium
• Potassium
• Zinc

I wouldn’t depend on lemons and limes to get the vitamins and minerals you need. But they are a fantastic source of flavonoids.

Health benefits of citrus:
• Anticancer properties
• Antibacterial properties
• Antiviral properties
• Antifungal properties
• Antidiabetic properties
• Decreased CNS disorders
• Decreased formation of kidney stones
• Decreased risk of gout
• Citrus can potentially act as a diuretic
• Increased bile
• Increased peristalsis
• Citrus can help support the liver
• Citrus may help counter constipation

The vitamin C in citrus can also potentially help a person get rid of scurvy, which is a severe vitamin C deficiency. A few symptoms of scurvy are frequent infections, frequent colds, cracked lips, and cracked corners of the mouth. Spongy, bleeding gums is another big symptom of scurvy.

It’s important to keep in mind that when you consume sugar, you can’t absorb vitamin C. Smoking will also block vitamin C absorption.

[Benefits of Meditation]
Beth Ruhmann:
There are lots of health benefits that we're seeing from meditation. The first ones are usually the physical symptoms that we have when we're under stress. Our blood pressures go down, our heart rates go down.
Beth Ruhmann:
Probably, what's more important are the psychological things that we tend to feel when we're under lots of stress, so when we get anxious, we get nervous, meditation can help those actually reduce and almost get rid of them so that we're not so worried about all the things that we're concerned about.

[Beth discussing mediation classes to a group of people]
Beth Ruhmann:
Even if you do one minute of breath work, if you do four deep breaths, all of the sudden you feel very relaxed, and so anyone can do that anywhere. You can do that sitting in your car, if you're caught in traffic on 995, even if the kids are running around and it's very noisy, and all of the sudden, you just take a couple of deep breaths, you start to feel very relaxed.
Beth Ruhmann:
And that's probably one of the best methods that I've got for helping people get rid of the stress, but we also have classes as part of our community health program that we teach meditation. And there are lots of forms. We don't have to sit cross legged, we don't have to do what sometimes people think is a very odd or a very unusual way. Meditation is just getting quiet. Even prayer is meditation and it's a very easy thing for us to do.
Beth Ruhmann:
I think we've got so many avenues that we can learn how to do meditation and it doesn't hurt. There's no side effects from meditation. There's no negative side effects. It's just an easy thing for almost everyone to do. So, I just encourage everyone to try it.

Do you want to eat chocolate but still stay healthy? Nutritionist Diane Vizthum has a sweet solution! #hopkinshealthhacks

Yes, says Johns Hopkins nutritionist Diane Vizthum, M.S., as long as you follow these simple guidelines:

• Eat mindfully — don’t gobble up an entire box of chocolate in front of the TV.

• Plan your portion size — an ounce is a nice bite-size treat.

• Try dark chocolate. It contains powerful antioxidants.

• Read the label — chocolate with at least 70% cacao provides the most health benefits.

• Enjoy it! Making chocolate off-limits can increase cravings and feelings of guilt.

If you need help, or if you struggle with controlling your diet, talk to a registered dietitian or nutritionist.

➡️ Packed with Antioxidants
One study compared the antioxidant capacity of 26 different spices and found that cloves were the most potent. Cloves contain a compound known as eugenol which researchers believe to be responsible for most of the impressive health benefits.

➡️ Antibacterial Properties
This is also partly due to the compound eugenol, however, cloves contain lipids and oleic acid which have been shown to play an antibacterial role. Clove essential oil is often used as a mouthwash to treat oral infections.

➡️ Regulate Blood Sugar Levels
Studies found that their properties can help increase the uptake of glucose from the blood to your cells. Ultimately, this helps increase the production of insulin.

➡️ Promote Healthy Bones
Cloves are packed with calcium, phosphorus, boron, magnesium, and manganese which are important minerals that play a major role in healthy bone development. Studies found that the consumption of cloves was linked to increased bone density, bone mineral content, and overall bone strength.

➡️ Help with Digestion
The properties of cloves can increase the amount of gastric mucus that is produced which creates a barrier between the digestive lining and harmful fluids such as stomach acid and bile.

➡️ Prevent Stomach Ulcers
Researchers believe that eugenol helps increase gastric mucus, which protects the entire digestive system and helps prevent stomach ulcers from developing.

➡️ Reduce Inflammation
Inflammation is a natural part of the body's immune response and serves an important role in healing injuries and fighting off foreign invaders such as chemicals and microorganisms. However, if it persists for a period of time, it becomes chronic inflammation which has been linked to some of the world's most deadly diseases.

➡️ Boost the Immune System
This is an indirect benefit of cloves that occurs due to their ability to reduce chronic inflammation. Chronic inflammation is a key contributor to some of the world's most deadly diseases. Therefore, by reducing inflammation in the body, you can indirectly provide a boost to your immune system.

➡️ Treat a Toothache
The compound eugenol found in cloves can serve as a natural anesthetic, which can reduce pain that stems from a sore tooth. One study was performed to test the effectiveness of cloves compared to benzocaine, which is a topical anesthetic used in the dental setting.

➡️ Improve Liver Health
Researchers believe that the properties of cloves can play a role in reversing cirrhosis and reducing the risk of developing liver cancer. Studies found them to be effective in decreasing the amount of a specific enzyme that is involved in the development of liver disease.

Rosemary is an amazing herb that people use for all different kinds of things. People use rosemary as tea. They also use it in their food, marinades, stews, soups, and food preservatives. Rosemary is even used in certain cosmetics.

Rosemary has some very interesting properties, mainly from rosmarinic acid. Rosmarinic acid is the main phytonutrient in rosemary, and it has some really cool effects.

Rosemary can help stimulate hair growth when used as an oil and applied to the scalp. One study showed a significant change when using rosemary to help inhibit cognitive decline. Another study showed that rosemary can increase insulin sensitivity and help with weight loss. Rosemary is also neuroprotective.

There are potential benefits when using rosemary for:
• Epilepsy
• Pain relief
• Infertility
• Anxiety
• Constipation
• Muscle pain
• Diabetes
• Inflammation

If you have insulin resistance, which is very common, rosemary is a very good herb to use in your food on a regular basis.
