Fifty years ago: Egypt and Syria attack Israel
Fifty years ago on October 6, 1973, Egypt and Syria launched a coordinated surprise attack against Israeli forces in the Sinai Peninsula and Golan Heights.
The war, among other factors, ultimately led to the 1978 Camp David Accords, which saw Israel withdraw from Sinai in return for normalisation of relations with Egypt.
A peace treaty signed a year later marked the first time an Arab nation had recognised Israel.
Al Jazeera’s Hoda Abdel-Hamid reports.
