Lyrics:
Red red wine
Goes to my head
Makes me forget that I...
Still need her so
Red red wine
It's up to you
All I can do, I've done
Memories won't go
Memories won't go
I'd have sworn that with time
Thoughts of you would leave my head
I was wrong, now I find
Just one thing makes me forget
Red red wine
Stay close to me
Don't let me be alone
It's tearing apart
My blue heart
I'd have sworn that with time
Thoughts of you would leave my head
I was wrong, now I find
Just one thing makes me forget
Red red wine
Stay close to me
Don't let me be alone
It's tearing apart
My blue, blue heart
The official music video for 'Red Red Wine' by UB40, from the album ‘Labour Of Love’. Released in the UK August 8th 1983 reaching number 1 in the singles chart. Having initially been released in the U.S in March the following year, reaching number 34 on the Billboard Hot 100. Following the band’s performance of the song at Nelson Mandela’s 70th birthday party, it was subsequently rereleased on October 15, 1988 and the song hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.
In September 2014, the Official Charts Company announced that sales in the UK had reached one million.
The song was written by Neil Diamond, but UB40 had heard Jamaican-born singer Tony Tribe’s 1969 reggae version first and according to Astro they didn’t even realise it was originally written by Diamond, telling the Financial Times "Even when we saw the writing credit which said 'N Diamond,' we thought it was a Jamaican artist called Negus Diamond."
This official video was directed by Bernard Rose, filmed at the famous Eagle and Tan pub in Birmingham. The pub was also featured on the cover of the 1987 “Best of UB40” compilation.
