Back in early 2020, I had just quit my 9-5 job in higher ed (without another job lined up) because I was fed up with the toxic work environment.

After spending my entire life following the “safe” path as a WOC, I decided to finally choose me.

But then the panini press hit 👀 and all my options started drying up.

I was terrified from the uncertainty of not knowing when I’d find another job, and I was disappointed in myself for being so “irresponsible”.

But during my 6 months of being unemployed, I decided to spend time exploring other possibilities for my life.

I started this YouTube channel, talking about topics that mattered to me.

I decided to start a side business to see if I could help others and make the kind of impact I wasn’t seeing after a decade of working in HR.

And even after I went back to work - I was a different person.

Instead of giving my ALL to another 9-5 job that wouldn’t value me, I prioritized the impactful work that fulfilled and inspired me.

BUT…building my business wasn’t easy. I had so much to learn (and unlearn), so I share what I know to help others on a similar journey.

I’m hosting a workshop helping coaches, consultants, and online service providers go from IDEA to POSTED Reel in 10 minutes or less by simplifying the tech to highlight their MESSAGE.

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. As both an early stage technology venture capital investor and a social justice activist, John Levy outlines different frameworks for social change, impact and scalability. He describes his double bottom line experience of combining venture investment with social change in the context of an investment in BioLite, an off-grid energy company that has the potential to improve the lives of the 3 billion people who rely on cooking with traditional means by reducing black carbon output while using less fuel and co-generating electricity.

John Levy graduated magna cum laude from
Amherst College with a degree in American
Studies, and received his M.B.A. from the Harvard Business School. While at Amherst, Levy began a film series called Sparkling Celluloid, and has since continued to stay true to this spirit of entrepreneurship. For over 30 years, he has been working at the intersection of technology and finance. Mr. Levy was a founding partner of L Capital Partners’ where he led investments and served on the boards of WiSpry, OnPATH Technologies, HiGTek, Simparel, Evogen, and Peek. From 2001-2005, Mr. Levy was a partner in the Shalom Equity Fund, a seed stage tech fund based in the US and Israel. Since 1989, Mr. Levy has served on the board of Bend the Arc and was chairman of the organization from 2000-2006 overseeing the merger of two nonprofit organizations. Since 2010, he has served as the chairman of BioLite, a distributed energy company. In 2011 he was named the Chairman of Hypres, a digital RF and quantum computing company, and in 2012 became the founding Chairman of PlusN, a carrier aggregation software company.

Abstract:
Many Non-Profit organizations around the globe aim to influence social change and improve communities. A method these activists can use to help educate others about their message, mobilize their communities and cause social change is digital activism.

Digital Activism uses digital communication tools to achieve goals of social change. Successful social change campaigns often incorporate creativity and interactivity with a meaningful message for the community.

Let's explore successful strategies for digital activists:
1. Have goals and assess outcomes. Organizations must develop a strategy to achieve their goals, conduct research and assess the outcomes of the campaign efforts to succeed in their digital activism campaign.

2. Provide incentives to bring supporters in & give them a reason to stay. Consider the user's experience and play with digital tools & social media to make communication personal and meaningful.

3. Reinforce traditional means of activism.

4. Mobilize & inspire your followers. Communicating the organization's message and inspiring your followers to mobilize behind that message is by far the most important element of a digital activism campaign.

Clearly, digital activists face many challenges including, but not limited to: Internet user passivity, authenticity, online security, and information overload. These are all very real hurdles activists face, but they are not impossible to overcome.

Understand that your successful digital activism campaign will be comprised of personal sacrifice, great discomfort & wonderful learning opportunities. You will also need brilliant creative thinking to light the fire of social change.

Sad photos and depressing statistics can only get a charitable campaign so far, especially in a world with “skip” buttons and commercial-free streaming. Ian Smith invites his audience to explore creative, artistic, and hilarious campaign strategies, all while discussing how valuable it can be to rely on inspiration rather than guilt when targeting a broad audience. Ian Smith has been hosting community events and leadership dialogues across Texas since 2010, when he co-founded and expanded his dorm-room idea into a registered 501c3 non-profit. The Human-Environmental-Animal-Team (H.E.A.T.) started as a small club aiming to make volunteering fun. Within one year, the club won a cash grant and the title of “Organization of the year” from Texas State University. Since its creation in 2010, Ian has founded eight chapters at universities and high schools across Texas. Ian also founded and currently manages a successful abroad program focusing on reforestation and restoration of coral reefs throughout Asia and Central America. Outstanding members from H.E.A.T. chapters have taken positive activism to Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Thailand and Indonesia, changing the lives of attending students. The various H.E.A.T. chapters across Texas partake in physical volunteer work and have had many successes in launching creative awareness and fundraising campaigns. A presentation by Mike Haber

Description:
The presentation describes different ways that NGOs and non-profits have used sociocracy in their corporate governance structures. Based largely on Prof. Haber’s experience in representing U.S. activist organizations, he discusses different non-profit governance structures that embrace sociocracy within the context of the legal limitations on non-profits and NGOs.
