Shareholder resolutions—usually non-binding requests to corporations for changes to environmental, social, and governance practices—have taken on new significance as financial actors gain increased power in commodity chains. With a focus on shareholder resolutions on hydraulic fracturing in the US, I argue that these investor actions are part of a suite of coordinated and adaptive activist strategies to shape environmental governance from within. However, their power is constrained by the same political economy factors that enable shareholders to take collective action: the distance between individual investors and financial decisions; the structure of resolutions and managerial responses; and the complexity of investment vehicles and vote shares. This work joins an emerging body of research on investor-led governance and social movements, revealing the opportunities and limits of financial actors in shaping both corporate behaviour and energy systems.
Kate J. Neville is an Assistant Professor in Environmental Politics at the University of Toronto, cross-appointed to the Department of Political Science and the School of the Environment. Her research investigates the intersection of global markets and local places, with a focus on natural resources and energy. Through examining the global rush for biofuels and the so-called “shale gas revolution,” among other contested resources, her work brings together political economy and social movement scholarship to better understand how new commodities and technologies link local communities and ecosystems with global institutions and networks.
This is going to be our last episode for 2022. We’ll be back in January with more great conversations. If you have ideas for episodes or topics you’d like us to explore, please reach out through our contact form or on LinkedIn. I’ve had a blast getting this podcast started and I’m excited for it to only get better as we continue. A big thank you to all our guests, to our listeners providing feedback and reviews, and also to Julie Mai, and Aaron & Carey Green for their help behind the scenes.
For our last episode of the year, I’m excited to end where we began – and that’s talking about the importance of local activism and policy. Today’s guest is Adrian Martinez. No, not the football player, nor the baseball player – but the superstar Senior Attorney for Earthjustice. Adrian is working on a program called Right to Zero. In today’s episode, he talks about the critical role Earthjustice’s team of attorneys play at the city, state and federal level to help communities eliminate pollution through decarbonization. I was really energized by this conversation and encouraged to learn that the power we have at a local level can really add up to transformative, widespread change. Hope you enjoy this one. Happy holidays.
In today’s episode, we cover:
[3:22] What is Earthjustice & how it got started
[4:22] What is Right to Zero
[5:42] The intersection between environmental action & human health
[7:30] What needs to change in the built environment & how Earthjustice is helping
[9:46] Local change, how it works & progress for buildings
[12:04] How the Inflation Reduction Act will make a difference

Welcome to space! Today we're exploring planets and chatting about activism and advocacy, self-compassion, non-profits, and dream spaces.
Arthur Brooks discusses fundraising and development in a recorded webinar hosted by HKS Executive Education. “Cynicism masquerades as wisdom, but it is the furthest thing from it...
...Because cynics don't learn anything. Because cynicism is a self-imposed blindness: a rejection of the world because we are afraid it will hurt us or disappoint us. Cynics always say 'no.' But saying 'yes' begins things. Saying 'yes' is how things grow.”
During his conversation with Justin, you'll hear Jason Russell lay out the first sentence of this Stephen Colbert quote, but it's the second, unspoken, part that truly fits with his journey.
During his time as Co-founder and Chief Creative Officer at Invisible Children, Jason pushed through hurdles that most people never even dream of encountering, showing how honesty, transparency, and passion magnify the impact each of us has on the world.
Invisible Children's KONY 2012 viral phenomenon (that little video with over 100 million views) sparked a movement due in large part to Jason's visionary storytelling, but the effects weren't all positive, especially for the Invisible Children team. While their hyperfocus on a singular goal led to incredible outward success, it also resulted in a breakdown of internal care—a topic that Jason has spoken candidly about in the years following the KONY 2012 campaign.
Doing his part to normalize our conversation around mental health isn't all that Jason brings to the table, though. You'll hear him discuss Oprah and Obama, the spectrum of activism, his reaction to renewed racial tensions in America, and bringing activism to new generations through a radical new project, Broomstick Engine.

In this insightful talk, Nat explains why we shouldn't call out hypocrites, and what to do instead. Too often, Nat says, we use the hypocrisy of others as an excuse for inaction, and charity as an excuse to do anything. We target charitable messengers and avoid critiquing charitable messages. Nat argues that the exact opposite should be true. He explains that the people we call hypocrites often aren't actually hypocritical. Their hypocrisy is an illusion. As such, focussing on the hypocrisy of the messenger is inaccurate and misguided. Instead, Nat argues that we should focus on the validity of the message because this helps to maximize impact. We should not target charitable messengers, and critiquing charitable messages should no longer be taboo. Nat challenges us all to "rebut the message not the messenger" because what matters more than doing an action is the impact of that action. According to Nat, small minds rebut people but great minds rebut arguments!
Nat Ware is an entrepreneur, economist, and international development specialist. He is the Founder and CEO of 180 Degrees Consulting, the world's largest consultancy for non-profits and social enterprises, with branches in 28 countries and over 4000 consultants worldwide. Artist Rick Griffith is joined by Evan Weissman and Stephen Brackett to discuss non-violence and activism in art and beyond, asking the questions: How do we continue to apply pressure to our government? What is the action that moves the needle? How do you take activism from the digital world and social media to the real world? And what is the real work?
Rick Griffith is a British West-Indian Designer, typographer/letterpress printer, and writer/columnist at print magazine. After immigrating to the U.S. in the late ‘80s, it was his early jobs at Washington D.C. record stores that turned him on to graphic design. It was a (short) freelance career on Madison Avenue which funded his first practice, RGD (Rick Griffith Design), and it is his love of design (and his partner Debra Johnson) which sustains the design practice MATTER, which, over the last two decades, has grown into an ambidextrous design consultancy, print shop, workshop, and retail bookstore.
Evan Weissman is the founder and Civic Artist at Warm Cookies of the Revolution, a Civic Health Club that blends innovative arts and culture with crucial civic issues. Prior to founding Warm Cookies of the Revolution, he spent twelve years as a company member of the collaborative Buntport Theater Company, as playwright, director, designer, and actor. He also teaches courses on the radical foundations of nonviolence at Colorado College
Stephen Brackett has toured the world with his band, Flobots, using music as a platform for engagement and collective empowerment. His time as a philosophy student at Colorado State University nurtured his life-long love affair with the arts, education, and activism. Blending his passions, he co-founded the non-profit Youth on Record in 2008. Youth on Record exists to empower Colorado’s youth to achieve their academic, artistic, and personal best by employing local, professional artists as their educators.

Next is a topic that’s been on everyone’s minds throughout the year. Nonprofits in Ukraine are acting as first responders in the war and are under tremendous stress. But usually the last thing nonprofits worry about is taking care of themselves. That’s why TechSoup Europe is building a program that provides quick answers to the challenges of staying resilient. Anna Kuliberda, Senior Advisor for TechSoup Europe shares more in the next demo.

DEMONSTRATION
When non-profit organizations are suddenly confronted with a war situation, they face a multitude of challenges. Usually, the last thing on the list is supporting yourself, especially if it wasn't a practice in the pre-crisis era. That is why TechSoup Europe is building a program that provides quick answers to real-life challenges of staying resilient for Ukrainian organizations.
