"We need urgent action now. We need to switch to renewables. Renewables are no longer the solution of the future because the climate crisis is happening here and now in Europe and you can see it on the example of Ukraine, in the forefront. The war in Ukraine is happening on very fast pace but it is just one of the layers of the upcoming climate crisis and it is a threat for the security of Europe."

4. SOUNDBITE (English) Ilyess El Kortbi, Ukrainian climate activist living in Germany:
"I was thinking that the conferences of parties like the COP conferences are the worst places with empty words and empty promises but when I came to World Economic Forum, I saw that this bottom of the worst things that can happen was just drilled by this event here because people ignore the facts. People continue to speak as if nothing happens while children, families die every day in Ukraine and lose their future just as I lost my future."
5. Protesters holding signs
6. SOUNDBITE (English) Vanessa Nakate, climate activist from Uganda:
"Remember that the people in this place, it's all about business, it's all about profit. But then where the priority is in profit and business, then it means more people are going to continue suffering with droughts and cyclones and floods and, you know, loss of their cultures and loss of their islands. So we have to keep speaking and we have to keep holding the leaders accountable for them to know that we want climate justice and we want it now and we are not going to give up on dreaming about the future that we want but also we are not going to give up on fighting for that future."

9. SOUNDBITE (English) Helena Gualinga, climate activist from Ecuador:
"Worth it? I think it is essential, I think it's an essential part of the conversation, it's an essential part of the solution. We're not going to be able to find the solutions that we need if the people that are affected by climate change, by the fossil fuels industry are not directly active in the decision making, if they don't have a seat at the table."

STORYLINE:
About 50 climate activists gathered in Davos on Thursday to highlight issues they said were largely ignored during this week's World Economic Forum in the Swiss town.
The issues included human suffering, particularly in developing countries, from severe weather events like heatwaves and drought; reparations to poor countries that have contributed little to global warming but are suffering some of the worse effects, and plans at a government level to move away from fossil fuels.
"Keep it in the ground, let's keep it in the ground!" some chanted at the gathering, about a 10-minute walk from the main convention centre, where meetings between politicians, business leaders, scientists, academics, journalists and others took place from Monday through to Thursday.
El Kortbi, who said two of his friends had died in the war, argued that the war would not have happened had the European Union fully moved away from fossil fuels.

Animal activist Carrie The Parrot takes on gay reverse homophobe Charles Stadtlander. He said that drag queens and the transgender community were "radical" and "unrelated" and called anything we do in crossdressing "freak behavior" and "detrimental" to the gay community! Kiss my ass, Charlie. I ought to come to Atlanta and organize the rest of the LBT community against you and FOR Anne Fauver in teh current election for city council. Then lets see what you have to say.
I made thirty videos honoring Obama and dissing McCain and Palin and got honored for one of them in Texas. I am not unrelated, a freak, or detrimental. To stand up and speak my mind and make and edit my own music videos and say what millions want to hear said is NOT detrimental, except maybe to the hateful rhetoric of Log Cabin Republicans.
Call his campaign office and speak your mind!

Shareholder resolutions—usually non-binding requests to corporations for changes to environmental, social, and governance practices—have taken on new significance as financial actors gain increased power in commodity chains. With a focus on shareholder resolutions on hydraulic fracturing in the US, I argue that these investor actions are part of a suite of coordinated and adaptive activist strategies to shape environmental governance from within. However, their power is constrained by the same political economy factors that enable shareholders to take collective action: the distance between individual investors and financial decisions; the structure of resolutions and managerial responses; and the complexity of investment vehicles and vote shares. This work joins an emerging body of research on investor-led governance and social movements, revealing the opportunities and limits of financial actors in shaping both corporate behaviour and energy systems.
Kate J. Neville is an Assistant Professor in Environmental Politics at the University of Toronto, cross-appointed to the Department of Political Science and the School of the Environment. Her research investigates the intersection of global markets and local places, with a focus on natural resources and energy. Through examining the global rush for biofuels and the so-called “shale gas revolution,” among other contested resources, her work brings together political economy and social movement scholarship to better understand how new commodities and technologies link local communities and ecosystems with global institutions and networks.

For our last episode of the year, I’m excited to end where we began – and that’s talking about the importance of local activism and policy. Today’s guest is Adrian Martinez. No, not the football player, nor the baseball player – but the superstar Senior Attorney for Earthjustice. Adrian is working on a program called Right to Zero. In today’s episode, he talks about the critical role Earthjustice’s team of attorneys play at the city, state and federal level to help communities eliminate pollution through decarbonization. I was really energized by this conversation and encouraged to learn that the power we have at a local level can really add up to transformative, widespread change. Hope you enjoy this one. Happy holidays.
